I thought of another interesting (albeit cheesy) twist. Werewolves. Maybe make up some story about how they get "activated" if >x% of the moon is visible and include a special date for some sort of vampire party on winter solstice (because they like night) to see if they will clash.
Or more mundane (but also more realistic), something about a meteor shower being less fun if it's a full moon, so for the next Perseid meteor shower, will it be more or less fun?
Either of those might give a little bit more reason than just a passing inquiry about your own birthday or something else unrelated to the moon.
