Alert!

Hello, reader! If you intend to post a link to this blog on Twitter, be aware that for utterly mysterious reasons, Twitter thinks this blog is spam, and will prevent you from linking to it. Here's a workaround: change the .com in the address to .ca. I call it the "Maple Leaf Loophole." And thanks for sharing!

Row Games Galore

Update: I moved all the files that were shared on Box into a Google Drive folder. You can upload, download, and add the folder to your Drive if you wish. Please use responsibly.

I love a good Row Game but they are sure a pain to make. I just made a new one for reviewing surface area and volume, and in a minute I'm going to go lay down with a hot compress and a glass of wine.

I know some others are out there making them too, and I'd love it if we could all put them in one place, and save each other some work. So here is that place! It's a global folder on box.net and I think that means anyone with the link can bookmark it, download, upload, and we can share our little heads off. I put in four for now (but I'm pretty sure I have more floating around, I'll add as I find them.) I don't know what I'm going to do if spammers start putting garbage in there, obnoxious little soulless weasels that they are, but we'll try it for now. I used the naming convention "RG - Topic" but I don't really care what the files are named as long as they describe the topic.

  1. Kate,
Great idea! I got on a row game kick last year and made several after you gave me the idea. I will have to get on the ball and make a box.net account.

It may be next week before I have time, but sharing like this is a great idea. We may start a new trend here where all of us can share assignments in folders. Like maybe one for slope or solving equations or something like that?

  2. This is an awesome format, Kate! I'm a huge fan of anything competitive that encourages everyone to work and not rely on the "smart kid" in a group. Will have to see how I can contribute for the upcoming semester.

  3. @Mrs H I think posting them to Betterlesson is the best answer, and what I'd like to do eventually, but I haven't really ramped that up yet, and I don't think they have open enrollment yet. But if you want to try it let me know, I can ask them to invite you.

@mgolding Thanks - in practice it's more cooperative than competitive. Try it with a class, I think you will like it.

  4. I made one for systems of equations. Give me a day or two to find it and I'll share it with ya'll.

  5. Quick question: Do I need to have an account on that website before I can add something to the folder? I don't have one yet, and I can't figure out how.

Earlier this year I saw your idea for the Row Games, and I thought it was awesome and adapted to use as a method of quizzing in my class. It has worked great as a way to quiz students without the pressure of an "official" quiz. I have them work individually on their problem set until they are close to finishing. Then they pair with someone who completed the opposite problem set and compare their answers and come to an agreement on each "final" answer before turning it in. So now I have a few that I am happy to share! :)

  6. Hi Emily - Yep you need to have a box.net account to upload files. When you are on the page, click the button on the right side that says "Join Folder to Get Updates." Then it will prompt you to make an account. Once you do that, it will take you to the folder page where there is an "Upload" button. Thanks in advance for sharing the ones you made. I look forward to seeing them.

  7. This is absolutely wonderful! I am so glad I discovered your blog, Kate. Nothing better than collaborating with fellow educators who really care about stimulating the minds of students and making learning fun.

  8. I can't get any of the files to open. Not sure if it's a problem on my end or your end. Can you check?

  9. Hi Jennifer - I just randomly tried to both preview and download about 4 of them, and it worked fine. I'm not sure what is causing your problem. I'm sorry. If it's giving you a more specific error or you can tell me more, I'll try to help.

  12. Hey Jordan - I don't know! box.net can be finicky sometimes. Different browser? Gah.

Hi! I will have to approve this before it shows up. Cuz yo those spammers are crafty like ice is cold.
